Conference and Workshops on People-Centered Processes during the BangMod Creative Community Festival, 9 – 10 December 2017, 0900 – 15.00 @ Community Learning Centre (GPS 13.650942, 100.472036) in Wat PhuttaBucha, by the canal. This event explores with art and education processes to discuss how to work with people and respond to their independence and social-connection in the public and the everyday.

Kung CanDo aka Kung– Insight and Processes from a community educator on working with the community and social projects within the Bangkok communal spaces. (Thai with translation)
This presentation provides inside knowledge on the processes, expectations, and anxieties of working in the community and social projects with residents and participants in the Thai society. This session describes and reflects on the 15 years of teaching and experience of Khun Kung CanDo. This talk will discuss how working and collaboration within Thai society may look like.

Natalia Ludmila – Insight and experience from a participating artist on UNIDEE in Biele, Italy, a public art development program for artists. http://www.cittadellarte.it/unidee/
The UNIDEE, University of Ideas is situated in, Biele, northern Italy, UNIDEE is known to priorities development of socially engaged and community art in their residency programe for young artists, mostly funded by an UNESCO programme. Natalia Ludmila, a recent participant in this program will discuss her experience and viewpoints, based on the premises of a horizontal, collaborative, interdisciplinary and experimental laboratory. She describes her activities with a diverse group of practitioners as “In order to talk, ponder, eat, joke and /or experiment on and about a given subject-matter or practice.”

Daniela Brasil – MARS > THE DREAM CLASSROOM, an educational project that aims to be interdisciplinary, multigenerational and hands-on.
MARS is an educational project that aims to be interdisciplinary, multigenerational and hands-on. It aims to bring artists, architects, university students, children, elderly people to rethink their living environments in face of climate and demographic changes, by collectively developing and building experimental spaces that question the spaces we usually have around us. The objective is to imagine, design and build together small-scaled architectonic objects, within workshops that are designed according to the different part of the creative process, i.e. research, resources mapping, design, prototyping and building. The project to be shown in Bangkok is the first implementation of this ideas, and is addressing the topic of “alternative learning” by designing a “dream classroom”.

Jay Koh – Introduction to Master of Advanced Studies in Art & Society from Zurich University of the Arts, an open and progressive program that allow choices on sites (Havana, Hong Kong, Jatiwangi, Zurich) contents, duration and educators. http://artandsociety.net/
This is a program from the continuing education department of the Zurich University of the Arts in response to contemporary needs and self-determined learning.
This MAS in A&S incorporates open and progressive processes to allow individuals to choose from a variety of courses conducted by different educators, sites of studies and at their own pace of up to a duration of 6 years, to conclude the program. The programme are taught by educators working in different institutions and independent practitioners around the world. This program places emphasis on holistic processes to respond to public practices, the acquisition of knowledge and experience of the everyday and work with the constructive context of the real world situation.
This program is conceived and managed by the directors' team of Prof. Dominique Lämmli, Annemarie Bucher (PhD) and Lee Chun Fung, scheduled to begin in early 2018 in Zurich and Havana and will be followed in Hong Kong, Jatiwangi (Indonesia) and elsewhere

ALPP are based on the understanding and application of a dynamic complex of engaging dialogue and constructive participation to focus on how individual subjectivity is constructed and expressed in the everyday public spaces. This workshop applies participative art activities to focus on interactions that could reveal uncertainties, differences and commonalities. Actions that could initiate processes towards collaborations.

Day 2, 10 Dec.: Collaboration, Sustainability and Application.

Oak Wattanai Chanakot aka Oak – Artist working in Thai Public spaces and communities.
“Art should be a necessity and readily available like healthcare and education.” Oak believed in art and its power, he was first to organize a public art event in Soi Lat Phrao 112, a mix of Muslim-Buddhist community. He experimented with democratic process in organizing an art event and working in an urban community. Many Oak’s site-specific works require some sort of audience participation, whether it’s sharing perspective on a topic or urging small gestures of intervention, he created the space with the soul of the place in mind. In “Can I be with You?” And “My Films”, performance and process-based practices are used to explore the human mind to its limit and can be used as a reflective tool for participants.
Collaborative Horizon Roundtable
Cross-disciplinary/sector art activities and their potentials – with inputs from environmental department of KMUTT, residents of Thung Khru and artists Mae Aguinaldo-Mapa and Natalia Ludmila.
Jay Koh will report on the discussions and ongoing collaborations carried out by ARC station in the last few months with different engineering departments in KMUTT and residents in Thung Khru. These initial activities are experimental in nature, exploring working together across disciplines and sectors. One concrete outcome is the mural painting form Mae Aguinaldo-Mapa, Natalia Ludmila that incorporate the recycled magnetic powder provided by the Environment Engineering department. This powder is presently used to provide mobility aids to the visually impaired persons as guidelines in public spaces. This powder are now integrated into the mural and can be read by sensor developed by the Control Engineering department. This session will explore communication processes and future ideas for fruitful collaboration. Jay Koh was a student in Chemistry and Biology at the University of Cologne prior becoming an artist-curator. He works with the health and social activist group, Gesundheitsladen Koeln in Cologne as a researcher and critique on Genetic and Reproduction technology and had presented his expertise in the science conference OpenHere, Science Gallery, Trinity College, Dublin
BangMod Canal international Art Project in Communities (BCiAPC)
Thatree Pokawanich aka Doey - Introduction and Open Call to the durational BangMod Canal international Art Project in Communities (BCiAPC) with support from ARC station (Art, Research & Collaboration). This project supported by 3C will initiate 30 public artworks with the communities in 3 years. (Thai with translation)
Artist, Thatree Pokawanich aka Doey, public and community art director of 3C project will introduce and discuss this 3 years public art program and Open Call. This would concern the public art creation and residency program for foreign and Thai artists. This discussion is centered on the rationale behind this durational engaging public participative art, research and collaborative project to promote people-centered processes, building relationship and ownership with the residents and communities in Thung Khru. Funded locally, this project will create 10 works each year, each work with a maximum support of 50,000 Bahts for local expenses. All public works to be developed by 5 Thai and 5 foreign artists. Selected artists are offered the opportunity to be consulted or mentored by Jay Koh (director of ARC BangMod station (Art, Research & Collaboration) and author of Art-Led Participative Processes) during this public durational art program to explore holistic and ethical processes to nurture collaboration and build sustainability with residents and stakeholders. ARC station and 3C are constantly nurturing collaborations across disciplines and sectors, present partners are different departments in KMUTT (King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi) working on projects to respond to environmental, artistic and communities’ issues.
BCiAPC is situated in Thung Khru district, one of the largest municipal in southern Bangkok in term of the area but less densely populated and close to the sea. This district does not resemble the Bangkok known to outsiders, without tourist attraction, hotel, mass transport system, is part city, part suburb and part countryside with on-going agriculture and fish farm activities. This district includes vibrant NGOs, a large Muslim community with more than 10 mosques, various markets and as an educational hub with the Islamic College of Thailand, the established King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), different colleges and concept schools. BCIAPC is conceived under 3C project who convene the BangMod Creative Community Festival, the 2nd event to be held this December include participation and collaboration with more than 29 local NGOs, religious and community groups. This event which includes a canal run on the 10th Dec., is situated in 5 zones along a 3 km stretch of the BangMod canal in Thung Khru.

Workshop conducted by Julaporn Buakaow aka Mok and Daniela Brasil, using MARS to engage Arts & Life, a real-world project. This workshop explores the ecological environment and bio water systems in this project.
Arts & Life is a long-term sustainable real-world project in BangMod, bringing together ecology consciousness, healthy living with active art and cultural engagements. Situated on a 2 rai (3200 sqm) parcel beside the canal and opposite Wat PuttaBucha. A collective comes together to initiate creative studio spaces, tree house, multipurpose hall with café and info centre. One of the initiatives is to explore collaboration with progressive architects to discuss the responsive model of living and with others to explore social enterprises that could respond to the constructive context that could promote meaningful environmental and personal cares.

Speakers BIO
Daniela Brasil is an architect, artist, teacher and curator. She has initiated various collaborative and transdisciplinary projects in public spaces that use playfulness and radical imagination as exercises for active citizenship and tools for people’s empowerment. She received her PhD and her Master of Fine Arts in Public Art and New Artistic Strategies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany, after having studied Architecture and Urbanism in Rio de Janeiro, Environmental Urban Design in Lisbon and Barcelona, Social Sculpture in Oxford. Since 2011, Assistant Professor and Researcher at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Graz University of Technology, Austria. Her research interests lies mainly on pedagogic, socially engaged artistic and spatial practices that focus on horizontal forms of exchanging knowledge and know-how; searching for ways to (un)learn hegemonic thoughts, behaviours and representations. She is also a member of the Open Modes Consortium Graz, the Daily Rhythms Collective, Rotor <center for contemporary art> Advisory Board, and has been collaborating with Studio Magic in projects on experimental architecture since 2013.

Julaporn Buakaow (Mok) is a lecturer and a visual artist who works with a variety of mediums such as sculpture, photograph and media installations. She graduated from Chiang Mai University and earned an MFA in Public Art and New Artistic Strategies from Bauhaus University Weimar in Germany. Mok has collaborated with Thai and international artists and held different workshop for many years. She main focus is to encourage and gain new experiences with non-art expert audiences who try to challenge themselves out of their comfort zones and get dirty hands while exploring their creative minds.
Kung Can Do works at the Siam Araya Association and he is the founding members of the Can Do team and 3C project. Moreover, he is the founder of Cafe' Can Do (volunteer center for different communities) in Thungkru district and continues to work with the Can Do Team engaging and providing various social and educational programme with residents. He graduated with a bachelor degree from Rajabhat Suansunandha University and continued a master degree in public administration at National Institute of Development (NIDA).
Mae Aguinaldo-Mapa (Manila, Philippines) works across fashion, crafts, photography, participatory and
pedagogic projects in developing her art practice. Her work taps into material cultures and their stories
of adaptations, traditions, and processes. In 2013, during an artist residency, she led T-shirt recycling
workshop sessions with a group of school kids and a group of hearing-impaired women residing within
the Majalengka Regency in West Java, Indonesia. She practices DIY fashion and will be sharing her
personal fashion projects and techniques in the workshop session.

Natalia Ludmila
(1980) born in Mexico City and raised in Canada. She holds a BVA in which she specialised in painting by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Mexico) and a Masters in Digital Design from the University of Canberra (Australia). Her work has been exhibited in several solo and group shows in Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Australia and Singapore among other countries. She was the Second Prize recipient in the XVIII Ibiza Biennale -Ibizagrafc'- with the project dfm e.p.(Spain).
In 2012 she was awarded the International Residency grant by FONCA (National Fund for Culture & Arts. Mexico) and spent three months at INSTINC Artspace in Singapore. Ludmila has exhibited in and had work commissioned by the Diego Rivera Anahucalli Museum (Mexico City).
In 2014 she took part in the -The Great Collaboration- project in Singapore along with ten other artists. In the same year, Ludmila was also named in The 200 top expressions of Mexican Art initiative and catalog and had work selected for the National Landscape Biennale (Mexico).
Ludmila currently lives and works in Bangkok.

Oak, Wattanai Chanakot, born in Bangkok, Thailand. Graduated with an MA, Art in Public Realm at Konstfack, Stockholm, Sweden.
Thatree Pokawanich (aka Doey) is an artist and social entrepreneur. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts in Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok and has shown in various exhibitions in Thailand. He has regularly contributed to the historical public art event, ChaingMai Social Installation in the 90s. He is one of the founding members of the 3C project in Bangkok, direct the BangMod Canal international Art Project in Communities and CEO of the social enterprise, Creative Technology for Community Co., Ltd
Jay Koh, Doctor of Fine Arts, is a cross-disciplinary artist-curator, educator and consultant focused on public participative and socially-engaged art. He has practiced and lectured in over 40 countries in Europe, Asia and elsewhere.
In 1995, he founded international Forum for InterMedia Arts (iFIMA) and in 2000 was joined by Chu Yuan to initiate public, participative and socially engaged art projects, such as the Open Academy program in Hanoi, Hue, Ulaanbaatar and Yangon.
Jay is the author of Art-Led Participative Processes: Dialogue & Subjectivity within Performances in the Everyday (University of the Arts Helsinki, 2015; SRID/Gerakbudaya, 2016) discusses holistic and ethical art processes in building relationships and seeking affirmation across sectors and disciplines. Currently, he is based in Southeast Asia, director of ARC station (art, research & collaboration) in Bangkok, a collaboration with 3C project and is an adviser, module supervisor and teaches in the Master of Advanced Studies in Art & Society of the Zurich University of the Arts.
