Artists at Work: Laboratorio Artístico de San Agustín
Catherine Sicot
Laboratorio Artístico de San Agustín (LASA) was established in 2008 as an art collective dedicated to developing new forms of interactions in public spaces, through the work of Cuban and international artists hosted in residence in San Agustín, a suburb on the outskirts of Havana. Founded by San Agustín-based, French curator Aurélie Sampeur and Cuban artist Candelario, LASA has since developed into a form of social enterprise, negotiating the structures in place for artistic production in Cuba, and surfing the economical reforms that have been reshaping the country in recent years. I met up with Sampeur and Candelario in San Agustín this spring to discuss the evolution of LASA and the crossovers between participatory practice, entrepreneurship and activism in Cuba today. – Catherine Sicot
